Miamisburg Chooses Rumpke for Waste and Recycling Services

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – Nov. 26, 2012—After reviewing results of an independent study and a regional bidding process, Miamisburg City Council has voted to contract Rumpke for residential waste and recycling services in 2013.

This decision by City Council represents a fundamental change in one of the core services traditionally provided by City employees.  It also represents a continuing assessment by City officials of cost-efficiency in local government operations.  The transition to a private contractor is projected to save $3 million over the next five years.

“This is one of those services that is provided by the private sector in many communities in southwest Ohio,” City Manager Keith Johnson said.  “Our residents are going to see some service enhancements at the same monthly cost, while the City will see some long-term budget relief, especially as it pertains to capital expenditures.  It’s a good value, and Council made a sound business decision.”

Detailed information about the transition will be provided to residents by both the City and Rumpke around the first of the year.  At this time, residents should be aware of the following:

  • Rumpke will begin serving City residents Feb. 1.
  • There will be no change in the current $12 monthly refuse fee, and the City will continue billing for this service.
  • Residents can continue using their own refuse containers, but Rumpke also has large, wheeled carts available for rent at a nominal cost.
  • The current blue recycling bins will be replaced by a new larger recycling carts at no cost.
  • Some collection days may change, but schedules have not yet been determined.
  • No City employees will lose their jobs as a result of this change.  Staff members will have opportunities to fill positions that are currently vacant.
