Residents Recycle 48,000 Pounds of Cartons During Fourth Quarter of 2013

CINCINNATI – Feb. 10, 2014 – Since announcing that cartons can now be recycled in its recycling program, Rumpke has seen a ton of them – 12 tons to be exact.

Shortly after the grand opening of its new state-of-the–art recycling center in St. Bernard this past November, Rumpke announced it would begin accepting carton containers like juice and milk cartons.

“Rumpke is committed to growing recycling in the region,” said Jeff Rumpke, vice president.  “We built our new Cincinnati recycling facility with the ability to handle more recyclables and to process new types of material. We are always out there searching both domestically and internationally to identify new manufacturers that are willing to take and use recyclables from our region.”

Rumpke hopes to see carton recycling grow in popularity as more people become aware of its recyclability. Both Rumpke and the US Carton Council are currently promoting carton recycling through paid advertisements.

Types of carton containers now accepted include juice, milk, soy milk, soup, broth, egg substitute and wine cartons.

To ensure your cartons are recycled, please follow these easy steps:

1. Empty the container. Containers still containing liquid will not be recycled

2. Remove caps or straws

3. Toss the carton in the recycling container with other acceptable items

In addition to cartons, residents can recycle:

  • Plastic bottles and jugs (please flatten and reattach the lid)
  • Glass bottles and jars (any color)
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Empty aerosol cans (with lids and tips removed)
  • Paperboard (cereal boxes, 12-pack containers, etc.)
  • Cardboard (broken down to 3'-by-3' sections)
  • A variety of paper products, including:
    • Office paper
    • Newspaper
    • Magazines
    • Junk mail and envelopes (with or without windows)
