Rumpke Invests $2.5 Million in Dayton Recycling Plant

DAYTON, Ohio—May 13, 2014—Construction is underway at Rumpke Recycling, where the family-owned company is spending $2.5 million to upgrade the facility.

A new sortation system will replace aging equipment to improve the plant’s efficiency. Machines will sort glass and cardboard from more than 500 tons of recycling brought into the plant daily. Cardboard will be baled and shipped to manufacturers while glass will be further processed on site. Other recyclables—metals, paper and plastic—will be sent to the company’s new Cincinnati plant for further sorting and processing.

“This investment will allow us to recycle more efficiently, ultimately leading to a larger volume of recycling,” said Rumpke Regional Vice President Mike Bramkamp. “The new Dayton model could serve as a template for our other regional facilities as we continue to develop methods of recycling more. We are encouraged by the rising interest in recycling from residents and businesses in our region.”

The company is also installing a dust collection system that will improve efficiency as well as the quality of glass cullet.

Rumpke has had a recycling plant in Dayton for more than 20 years, employs more than 200 people locally and is a DRG3 Green Certified Business.

Rumpke’s 11 recycling plants throughout the region process 350,000 tons of recycling per year, combined.  The company has invested $50 million in recycling in recent years.
