Three Area Communities Turn to Rumpke Landfill for Electric Supply

GEORGETOWN, Ohio – July 13, 2017 – The communities of Georgetown and Yellow Springs, Ohio, as well as Williamstown, Kentucky, now have a new power source – Rumpke’s Brown County, Ohio, Landfill.

Rumpke partnered with Energy Developments to construct a 4.8 mega-watt power plant at its landfill located just outside of Georgetown, Ohio. Energy Developments broke ground on the plant in November and it is now operational, with all renewable power generated from this facility being sold to American Municipal Power of Ohio under a long term agreement.

“Rumpke’s mission is to provide complete solid waste solutions that preserve our environment,” said Bill Rumpke Jr., president and CEO, Rumpke. “Landfill gas recovery and recycling is a key. Using landfill gas as a fuel source allows us to reduce greenhouse gases produced at our site and provides the region access to a cleaner energy source.”

Landfill gas is produced through the natural process of decomposition. The gas is collected at the site through 80 gas wells. Prior to the gas plant completion, the gas was destroyed.

“Rumpke has a long history of recovering and recycling landfill gas,” Rumpke said. “The Brown County Landfill is our third location to feature this type of technology. We also have facilities at our Pendleton County, Kentucky, landfill and our Colerain Township, Ohio, landfill – which is home to the world’s largest landfill gas to direct energy pipeline.”

“Energy Developments is proud to partner with Rumpke and the local communities on this environmentally beneficial project” said James Harman, Chief Executive Officer of Energy Developments.  “The Brown County project fits in with our strategic growth plan to expand our North American renewable business through the development of new projects, and we are very excited to be partnering with Rumpke at Brown County.”
