Rhonda and Jozy Hanos of Brookville, Ohio were recently recognized at a City Council meeting for their recycling efforts, but they have been committed to conserving landfill space and natural resources for many years.
“We have always recycled,” Rhonda said. “We recycled when we lived in Dayton and started recycling in Brookville as soon as we moved here in 1999. We recycle so we can decrease our footprint on this planet and make our world more sustainable for our children and grandchildren.”
The City of Brookville provides curbside recycling for residents at no extra charge. Find out about recycling options in your community.
A 2007 study by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources found that about 60 percent of the waste going into Ohio landfills could have been recycled. The Hanos recognize their ability to improve this.
“In this throw-away society we are accumulating too much garbage,” Rhonda said. “If each person does their part then we can reduce the amount of garbage in our landfills. It is also easy and is the absolute right thing to do.”

“We recycle everything we can,” Rhonda said. “Things have changed over the years and there are a lot more things that can be recycled.”
