Landfill cap construction at the Medora Landfill. 

Construction of a partial cap at the Medora Landfill (Jackson County, Indiana) is underway and Rumpke recently showed the project to friends and neighbors at the Landfill’s annual picnic July 12.

More than 100 guests enjoyed fish fry and brought side dishes and desserts to share. After dinner, guests took a bus tour to see the 20-acre portion of the landfill that is being capped. The construction will permanently close two cells of the landfill (an area that will no longer be used for trash disposal).

The five-month project will be completed in August and has employed about 10 people from Rust Construction in Seymour, Ind. The cells were constructed in accordance with Subtitle D landfill requirements in the 1990s. The construction includes a combination of clay, synthetic geomembrane and geotextile liners underneath and now, on top of the trash. Read more about modern landfill construction.

Gas flares are also installed with the future possibility of capturing methane as a renewable energy source. Rumpke has been recovering landfill gas at other facilities since 1986.

The picnic concluded with an awards presentation and door prizes. Recent Crothersville High School graduate Denise Maxie was presented with the 2012 Medora Landfill Scholarship. Rumpke gave the Golden Fork Award for the best side dish to Valleri Curry for her pasta salad. Barb Freeman earned the Golden Spoon Award for her dessert, angel food cake with strawberry topping. The Exchange Club of Brownstown also presented the “Proudly We Hail” award to Rumpke for the site’s new flag pole on State Route 50.

Owned and operated by Rumpke since 1983, the Medora Landfill currently accepts about 1,100 tons of municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris daily. The Landfill earned an environmental stewardship award from the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Management Districts in 2011.
