MEDORA, Ind.—June 19, 2012— Recent Crothersville High School graduate Denise Maxie was selected for the Rumpke Medora Landfill Scholarship based on her commitment to environmental stewardship.
“Jackson County is such a beautiful place,” Maxie wrote in her application to Rumpke. “It will only stay this way if we take care of it. It is our duty to teach others about caring for our environment.”
For three years, Maxie volunteered as a counselor for Earth Loving Friends (E.L.F.) Camp to teach children about recycling. As a member of the student council, she is involved in the school’s classroom recycling program. During her senior year, Maxie served as District XI FFA president, Crothersville FFA vice president, National Honor Society president and Jackson County Junior Leaders vice president.
Maxie plans to study developmental and family sciences at Purdue University.
Rumpke awarded $20,000 in scholarships this year. Owned and operated by Rumpke since 1983, the Medora Landfill accepts municipal solid waste and construction demolition debris. The Landfill earned an Environmental Stewardship Award last year.
