Rumpke Finds New Use for Brown County’s Landfill Gas

GEORGETOWN, Ohio – August 13, 2015 – Rumpke Waste & Recycling is partnering with Energy Developments Limited (EDL) to construct and operate a landfill-gas-to-energy plant at its Brown County, Ohio, Landfill.

Energy Developments Limited will construct a 5 mega-watt plant that will convert enough landfill gas to electricity to power 3,000 homes. The companies hope to begin the permitting process in 2015 and construct the plant in 2016.

“We currently destroy the landfill gases as an odor control measure,” said Jim Hext, Brown County Landfill manager, Rumpke. “We have been working toward this plant for years, and we are very excited to have found a long-term partner with Energy Developments Limited.”

Landfill gas is produced through the natural process of decomposition. Currently, Rumpke’s more than 60 gas wells are directed to a central flare system and destroyed. Rumpke is currently working to expand its gas collection system, and will have a total of 80 gas wells by the end of 2015.

“EDL is delighted to have an opportunity to deliver a new 5 mega-watt greenfield power station to utilize the landfill gas on a long-term basis from Rumpke’s Brown County landfill,” said Greg Pritchard, EDL Managing Director. “We look forward to a long and productive relationship with Rumpke.”

EDL is an international provider of safe, clean, low greenhouse gas emissions energy and remote energy solutions. The company currently operates power stations in the United States (including three in Ohio), Australia, United Kingdom and Greece, totaling more than 4 million mega-watts of energy.
