Three communities in Montgomery County, Ohio, were selected for Rumpke Recycling Clean & Green Community Awards. Dayton, Brookville and Union have earned distinction for their outstanding curbside recycling programs.

Montgomery County communities that process recycling at the Rumpke Recycling Material Recovery Facility in Dayton were considered for the awards. Rumpke looked at three factors for consideration: total volume generated, volume generated per household, and volume increased. Not all curbside programs are created equal, so three communities were chosen to represent different areas of achievement. 

 

City of Brookville

"These communities have made a tremendous effort to conserve landfill space and natural resources,” said Rumpke Regional Vice President Mike Bramkamp. “We are proud to work with Dayton, Union and Brookville on their recycling programs. We appreciate the efforts of all Montgomery County residents who are recycling.”

 The City of Dayton earned a Clean & Green Community Award for generating the highest total volume in 2010 at 3,954 tons. Dayton began phasing larger carts into select neighborhoods last year. City workers collect recycling and deliver it to the Rumpke MRF in Dayton.

For achieving the highest volume per household, the City of Brookville earned an award. In 2010, Brookville residents recycled an average of 36 pounds per household per month. Residents are provided 18-gallon bins, which have been collected weekly by Rumpke since 2006.

 

City of Union

The City of Union demonstrated a 17.24 percent increase in recycling volume from 2009 to 2010, earning the community an award for the most improvement. Union has been recycling with Rumpke since 1989.

Recycling awards are not a new concept at Rumpke. Once a month, Rumpke recognizes a business as a “Recycler of the Month” at a Columbus Blue Jackets Game.

Rumpke has also worked to recognize employees with contests such as the Green Space for districts that increased recycling or improved the appearance of their workplace. The Caught Green Handed contest recognized individual employees being green at work or home.
