Residential Garbage Removal in Columbus FAQs:

How does trash pickup service work in Columbus, Ohio?

If you have a Homeowner Association (HOA), check to see whether it hires its own private trash collection service. If not, Rumpke provides comprehensive residential trash and garbage collection and recycling services. You can either call us at (800) 828-8171 or submit a service request form online to register.

We offer weekly curbside pickup of up to six 32-gallon trash cans or bags. Make sure to put your trash and recycling out the night before your scheduled collection day. For more details, check your service guidelines on the back of your invoice or on our website.

How much does it cost?

We offer competitive pricing for household waste management. Call us at (800) 828-8171 so we can discuss your particular needs.

How do I find my trash pickup schedule?

You’ll be assigned a once-a-week curbside trash and recycling pickup day when you register for our services. Holiday schedules may vary, so check with us online to see how you might be affected.

How do I schedule bulk trash removal, such as for moving or renovations?

For bulk trash collection, give us 48-hour notice before your regularly scheduled trash collection and we can dispose of your waste for you.

You can also opt for our dumpster service. With a roll-off container, you can discard large volumes of junk and/or construction debris resulting from major operations like a deep spring cleaning or a home remodeling.

Our dumpster sizes range from 15 to 40 cubic yards. Even the smallest 15-cubic-yard size holds the equivalent of about four or five pickup trucks. Call us ahead of time so we can determine the best dumpster for you, as well as advise you of any items that may or may not be accepted at the landfill.

How do I dispose of large items like furniture, mattresses, and appliances?

If you would like to have larger items picked up curbside, make sure to let us know at least 48 hours before your regularly scheduled collection. You should note that we cannot do curbside pickups of televisions larger than 32 inches, and mattresses or upholstered furniture must be completely sealed in disposable plastic for removal.

If you have several large items that you are discarding as part of a garage, basement, or attic cleanout, you might consider a dumpster rental.

Do you offer household hazardous waste disposal?

Per federal law, Rumpke cannot accept hazardous materials like:

  • Batteries

  • Fluorescent light bulbs

  • Paint

  • Antifreeze

  • Freon

  • Combustible materials like gasoline and used motor oil

  • Any other items identified with “Danger” or “Poison”, including pool chemicals, insecticides, and some cleaning supplies

The best way to dispose of such items is to use them up as intended. What you should never do? Throw them out in the trash or down the drain. This is not just harmful to the environment, but can also cause dumpster and trash truck fires, especially during warmer weather.

Fortunately in Columbus, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) contracts Environmental Enterprises Incorporated (EEI) to offer household hazardous waste disposal for all Franklin County residents. Most items will cost you nothing to throw away, with the exception of latex- and water-based paints, which require a small disposal fee. Simply drop off items at EEI's Household Hazardous Waste Center at 645 East 8th Avenue.

How do I schedule trash and garbage service?

Start by filling out our service request form online. Once you’ve indicated what sort of household trash pickup service you’re in need of, we’ll work with you to find the right pricing and waste pickup schedule for you.

How do I get residential recycling services?

Rumpke’s recycling center relies on the mutually beneficial single-stream recycling process, where we collect all recyclable materials together in a single container. That means recycling is easy for you, since you don’t have to separate out your different recyclables. It’s also easier for us, since we can make sure that all recycling is sorted properly.

In general, you can recycle:

  • Plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs

  • Glass bottles and jars

  • Aluminum cans

  • Steel cans and lids

  • Paperboard (like cereal boxes)

  • Cardboard

  • Office paper

  • Envelopes and junk mail

  • Newspapers, magazines and inserts

  • Telephone books and catalogs

  • Cartons

You can also throw away recyclables yourself. Grocery stores and city trash receptacles often offer recycle bins for discarding items like the ones mentioned above. For more specific information, feel free to give us a call here at our Columbus District Office, and we’ll be happy to advise you.
