What Makes Something Recyclable in Columbus, OH?
Since there is no national standard for recycling, we consider these two things to determine an item’s recyclability:
- Can it move safely through our equipment?
- Do we have an end-user for that material?
If we cannot answer “yes” to both questions, it’s not recyclable and won’t be accepted in our program in Columbus or any other Rumpke recycling facility.
Columbus Recycling YouTube Series
In our “The Ways and Whys of Recycling” series on YouTube, Senior Vice President of Recycling Jeff Snyder explains the “whys” behind what’s recyclable and the “ways” Rumpke continues to improve the recycling process. We’ll dive deeper into each topic of this series to give you the knowledge you need to become a confident recycler.
Recyclable Items—It Starts at the Store
If you live in Columbus, OH, effective recycling begins with the choices you make at the store. When you buy products made with recyclable packaging, you’re not only able to recycle more, but you’re also supporting a more sustainable economy in Columbus and across the state.
Let's take a closer look at each material so you know which items from your grocery list should be recycled.
Plastic Bottles, Jugs, Tubs, Cups and Clamshell Containers*
Due to the variety of plastics available, knowing which plastics are recyclable can be confusing. Rather than using numbers, we encourage people to focus on the shape.
- Bottles & Jugs: Any container where the top of the container is smaller than the base, usually with a screw on lid.
- Tubs: Butter tubs, yogurt containers; single-serve containers of fruit, pudding etc.
- Cups: Disposable plastic cups (Note: not red solo cups).
- Clamshell Containers*: Berry and salad containers.
Our plastic manufacturing partners in Bowling Green, Findlay and Lawrence County use recycled plastics to produce new bottles, jugs, tubs and cups, as well as carpeting, drainage pipes and other mixed plastic products.
*Only available to customers within Greater Columbus and Central Ohio, Greater Cleveland, northern Ohio, southeast Ohio and West Virginia.
Steel & Aluminum Cans
- 1 recycled aluminum can = 3 hours
Fun fact: Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to power a computer for three hours. If everyone recycled this material, those energy savings quickly add up!
Steel and aluminum are sent to Dayton, OH, and Muscle Shoals, AL, to produce new food and beverage cans, automotive parts and other metal materials.
Paper & Cardboard
- 1 Ton of recycled paper saves about 17 mature trees.
Fun fact: Just one ton of recycled paper saves nearly 17 mature trees, helping protect our natural resources.
Did you know that paper and cardboard materials make up a significant portion of landfill waste? Along with the popularity of online shopping, we’re working to collect as much cardboard as possible.
- Junk mail, newspapers, cereal and cracker boxes, magazines, paper bags and more!
- Helpful hint: If the paper product tears and breaks down in water, it's acceptable.
- Learn how to properly breakdown your cardboard.
Rumpke’s paper mill partners in Wapakoneta, OH, and Maysville, KY, use recycled cardboard and mixed paper to create new cardboard boxes, paper bags, toilet paper, tissues and more.
Glass Bottles & Jars
Glass is one of the most valuable recyclables because it can be recycled infinitely without losing quality. The glass collected at our recycling facilities is transported to our one-of-a-kind Glass Processing Facility in Dayton, OH, for further processing.
- Any color of glass bottles and jars used for food and drink.
- Not acceptable: Mirrors, window glass and drinking glasses.
- Learn more about glass recycling.
Our regional glass manufacturing partners in Defiance and Zanesville, OH, collect larger pieces of colored and clear cullet to make new bottles and jars, while fine-grind pieces are used in fiberglass insulation.
Cartons
Cartons are primarily made of paper, with thin layers of plastic that our end users can separate to create new products.
- Milk, broth, juice and ice cream cartons.
Cartons are used to create paper products, like paper towels.
Improve Columbus Recycling—Avoid Wishcycling
- Increases recovery rates, which helps increase public trust.
- Saves acres of Ohio landfill space for non-recyclable waste.
- Reduces processing costs of Ohio facilities.
- Increases material quality for local end-users.
When you toss unacceptable items in your recycling bin, no matter where you’re located, it’s considered “contamination.”
While we understand that people have good intentions (a.k.a. wishcycling), placing the wrong items in the recycling bin can interrupt the process, damage equipment, put employees at risk and even ruin the recyclability of acceptable items. There are many problems and dangers caused by wishcycling.
Items That Ruin The Recycling Process
Certain wishcycled items are capable of contaminating entire bins or truckloads of recyclable material, rendering them as waste that must then be transferred to one of our landfills. We see some of the following unacceptable items every day at our recycling facilities:
- Propane tanks
- Vapes
- Tanglers: chains, hangers, hoses and Christmas lights
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Pool & household chemicals
- Film: VHS & cassettes
- Plastic bags
- Organics: yard waste, food and dirt
- Textiles: clothes, shoes and mattresses
If you’re ever in doubt, check Rumpke’s acceptable items list, not the product’s label. The “chasing arrows” symbol doesn’t determine if an item is recyclable or not!
Batteries & E-Waste Sabotage Columbus Recycling Efforts
Batteries and electronics (e-waste) are hazardous materials, and hazardous materials should never be placed in recycling or trash containers.
In fact, one of the most dangerous items exposed to our Columbus facility employees is commonly found inside all our rechargeable devices: lithium-ion batteries. When damaged, these batteries spark dangerous fires in our trucks and recycling facilities.
Proper Battery Disposal
Fire inside The Rumpke Recycling & Resource Center caused by a lithium-ion battery.
To prevent harm to our employees, first responders and equipment, you can properly dispose of your used batteries and electronics in the following ways:
- Check with Franklin County Waste District to locate nearby drop-off locations.
- Visit participating retailers like Staples or Batteries Plus.
- Visit Woodsy Owl's simple guide to turn your batteries in!
- Donate electronics in good condition.
- Look through Rumpke’s Proper Waste Disposal.
Columbus—Know Before You Throw!
Successful recycling in Columbus, OH, starts with informed and motivated community members who recycle the right items. That’s why Rumpke provides educational resources and an acceptable items list to our neighbors and customers.
Below, we’ve included answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
How do I recycle lids?
Lids on glass jars and bottles are usually made of steel. Remove them and recycle both separately; our powerful magnets will capture the metal lids. For plastic containers, keep the lids on.
Are pizza boxes actually recyclable?
Yes! As long as the box is free of cheese and heavy grease, pizza boxes are recyclable.
Are lotion bottle pumps recyclable?
Containers with a pump are not recyclable; remove the pump before recycling the container.
Are paper egg cartons recyclable?
Generally, paper can only be recycled about five to seven times before the fibers become too short for reuse. Egg cartons are made from these short fibers, so they can’t be recycled—but you can compost them!
